Gun Shops & Manufacturers Meet Prospective Employees
At Brownells® Gunsmith Job Fair
Brownells recent Second Annual Gunsmith Job Fair concluded as a huge success. Two dozen employers including gun shops, manufacturers and the U.S. Army, interviewed and took job applications from more than 100 students attending resident gunsmithing school programs, as well as several experienced gunsmiths.
CEO Frank Brownell said, “Gunsmiths are critical to the shooting industry, so we’re absolutely delighted that everyone made so many good contacts. It’s wonderful to see so many shops growing and expanding.”
Everyone gathered at the Iowa Speedway near Newton, Iowa for roundtable discussions with a panel of experts talking about the gunsmithing business, another with BATF and the NRA discussing legal issues and a seminar with Poweshiek Iowa Development on how to start a small business. The seminars were followed by several hours of the prospective gunsmiths interviewing one on one with some of the biggest names in the business.
One of those big names, Bill Laughridge of Cylinder and Slide stated, “The Job Fair is something the industry has needed for a long time and I’m proud that Brownells is the first to sponsor such an event. I spoke with several individuals that I’m very interested in for my organization and I’m going to let my peers know what an opportunity they missed by not attending this Job Fair.”
Eben Brown from the E. Arthur Brown Company was also pleased. “From our perspective it was a tremendous success. We have not one but actually several good candidates to consider for the job at E. Arthur Brown Company. And, I just can’t put into words how big of a deal this is for us, thank you for inviting us.”
Gunsmith and prospective employee Bob Fried said, “I’ve been in the business twenty-five years and I’ve run into the same problems they talked about in the gunsmithing seminar,” Concerning the job search, he continued, “I left resumes at five of the six places I thought I’d fit in and I’ve got an interview right after we’re done.”
According to Pete Brownell, company President, “We really want to do our part to help grow the gunsmithing industry. The turnout was great and we’re going to expand again next year. We’ll have the 2009 Gunsmith Career Fair in early April again, back here in central Iowa. The exact dates of next year’s Career Fair will be posted at www.gunsmithcareerfair.com as soon as they are confirmed.”
